In this "Part Two" of the Ireland Page I will feature commercial and organizational web LINKS. Some of these web sites will be listed because "I like them" and some will be associate sites, because I really like them. Of course to be Honest we all exchange LINKS so that we can generate more visits to our own web site.

This is the nature of "community" and "networking" on the World Wide Web, bringing people, places, and events together. Sharing information and ideas with the expectation of opening new worlds and meeting new friends.

So, enjoy your visit. Pull up a chair, have a cup of tea or what ever and chat awhile. Let us know about you and your interests. Make friends and may your cup of joy be full, your heart blessed with peace and love and your pockets full of GOLD!

Ireland's History in MapsThese Web Sites have lots of details and resources.
History + Geography + Genealogy - Ireland's History in Maps - Irish History, Geography and Genealogy With a Special Focus on Ancient and Medieval Irish Tribes and Septs - This site is maintained by Dennis Walsh who has done a great job in research. He also maintains:

County Kilkenny Ireland Genealogy and HistoryCounty Kilkenny Ireland Genealogy and History - Maps and History of Early Irish territories, clans, tribes and placenames. The geography of early Ireland. County Kilkenny Irish Genealogy explores the family roots of Kilkenny County Ireland, in South Leinster Province. I recommend you try both of these web sites and plan to spend some time at each for there is a ton of information.

IrishGen.com - Irish Genealogy Online - If you are searching for your Irish ancestors or want to discover the history of your Irish surname or find their place of origin, their townland, parish or county, then Irish Gen is your online gateway.

New January 2006 In doing a search with Google I came across these links which have some very interesting resources.  They are Online Resources from the Harold B. Lee Library, BYU.

EuroDocs: Primary Historical Documents From Western Europe Selected Transcriptions, Facsimiles and Translations.

History of Ireland: Primary Documents Selected Transcriptions, Facsimiles and Translations.

Tudor History : This web site is loaded with information about the Tudor and their reign in England and the British Isles.  A very good Table of Contents leads you to many topics including "Chronologies of People and Events" and "Who's Who in Tudor History." Short to full-length biographies, some with portraits.  Also includes some of the pre-1485 people who played a part in the Tudor story.

Irish Ancestors - Irish Ancestors at Ireland.com is a comprehensive genealogical guide for those interested in exploring their Irish heritage.

Irish Genealogy - the website dedicated to helping you search for family history records for past generations. The website is now home to the historic records of Births, Marriages and Deaths of the General Register Office. These records join the Indexes to the historic records of Births, Marriages and Deaths that were already available on the website.

National Archives of Ireland - the National Archives Genealogy Website. From this page, you can now access the Census Records for 1901 and 1911, Census survivals for 1821-51, Census Search forms for 1841-51, the Tithe Applotment Books from 1823 to 1837, the Soldiers’ Wills from 1914 to 1917, and the Calendars of Wills and Administrations from 1858 to 1922.

Ancient Faces - Ancient Faces is a large visual genealogy exchange. - Ancient Faces wants to help bring faces to the names of our ancestors by adding photos to genealogy. They provide an exchange where the owners of old photos can share them for free so that people researching their family trees can see their ancestors.

Catholic Parish Registers - For most family history researchers, parish registers provide the earliest direct source of family information. Unlike many other records, parish registers provide evidence of direct links between one generation and the next (via baptismal registers) and one family and another (via marriage registers). They are also, for the majority of Irish people who lived during the 18th and 19th centuries, the only record of their existence.

History-Kilts-Controversy

In my reading and visiting a number of Celtic-Irish-Scottish Festivals I have come across a number of different questions with as many different answers.  So I though I would feature some interesting resources for those who enjoy reading about History and Tradition.  Each one of these web sites include additional links for your searching pleasure.  Enjoy - EEHealy

Virtuality of Ancient Ireland
A (much) Smaller Social History of Ancient Ireland:

"The old Irish writers commonly prefixed to their books or treatises a brief statement of "Place, Time, Person and Cause".

The Place, Time, Person and Cause of Writing of these web pages are: Their place is Cuskinny, Cobh, County Cork, Ireland; their time is the year of our lord one thousand nine hundred and ninety seven; the author is Brian Walsh; and the cause of writing is to give knowledge to those who desire to learn about the Old Irish People.

These pages are based around information in an old book that I came across. Why is an old book more interesting than a modern study? Could it be that learning about our history has more to do with trying to understand a slightly alien culture rather than simply reading a set of facts/opinions. Everything about an old book - the style of presentation and prose, the texture of the pages and the binding, and the smell - is an aid to making that mental leap which can aid understanding."

Albanach
The Early History of the Kilt
by Matthew A. C. Newsome

"The kilt . . . an ancient and noble garment . . . remnant of the early Celtic race of Caledonia. These are some of the pervading attitudes that one might encounter at the various Scottish festivals and Highland Games around the country today.

Of course, ask an Irishman, and he will tell you that the kilt was actually an ancient garment from Ireland and only later brought into Scotland by migrating Gaels, and moreover the Irish also invented the bagpipes, whisky, and whatever else you care to name. Ask an Englishman and he will tell you how Thomas Rawlinson, an English native, invented the kilt in the 18th century!

Most of our ideas about the kilt are based on myth, legend, misconceptions, and (worse yet) Hollywood. Braveheart may get your blood up but depict anything remotely like historically accurate costuming it does not. I will attempt here to present the reader with some hard, solid facts about just when and where the kilt was developed (and when and where it was not), focusing mostly on the pre-1600 SCA period."

Reconstructing History
The Evolution of the Kilt
1600 to 1725 — The Belted Plaid

"Documented from the 15th century, and probably appearing much earlier, the saffron shirt was the signature garment of the Highland Scots, not the kilt or any of its precursors. In other words, Rob Roy got it right; Braveheart missed the mark."
